Two weeks of trial: victories and new challenges

The past week was marked by a series of court hearings in politically motivated cases.

During this “trial week,” some successes were achieved.

Yes, we can say that the Medvedchuk vs. Stus case (the case on the ban on distributing the book “The Case of Vasyl Stus”) has come to an end. The Kyiv Court of Appeal overturned the decision of the Darnytskyi District Court on almost all points (it did not overturn the only point prohibiting the distribution of the claim that Medvedchuk’s lawyer was appointed by the KGB to Stus).

The preventive measure of Victoria Kotelenets “Fortuna” was also mitigated - 24-hour house arrest was replaced with night house arrest.

At the same time, another hearing was held in Odessa in the case of necessary self-defense of Serhiy Sternenko. The court rejected the defense's request to release Serhiy from custody.

The day after the Sternenko birthday rally demanding the immediate release of political prisoners, writer, founder of the publishing house "Dim Chimer", participant in the Russian-Ukrainian war Vladislav Stafiychuk (Vlad Sorba) was detained. He is scheduled to be taken into custody on Tuesday, March 23, after 2 p.m.

On March 23, another hearing is scheduled in the case of Antonenko, Kuzmenko, and Dugar (the so-called “Sheremet case”). Despite the requirements of the law, the hearing in this case has not been held for a month (allegedly due to the judge’s vacation, then due to the illness of one of the jurors, and last week the entire convoy suddenly “fell ill”). Tomorrow, the 7th volume of the case is to be examined, and preventive measures will probably be considered.
